Justice Denied

One of the reasons why the teachers of the law wanted Jesus to die was because: they were scared that the multitudes that followed Jesus would have been seen by the Romans as an act of rebellion to overthrow their government, which would have precipitated their wrath [Romans] and caused them to raid Israel, therefore it was better if for the sake of Israel, one man dies. - (John 11:49-50)

Some were not really thinking about the raid of Israel, but about the fact that that they will lose their high positions should that happen.

It was the love for their positions, the comfort and power that comes with it, that prevented them from clearly seeing that Jesus is actually the Messiah they were waiting for.
Just because Jesus didn't come as they envisioned, they saw Him as a threat to their stability as a nation, hence a need to get rid of Him.

Would they have spearheaded the plot to kill Jesus should He have been a relative to any of them?

Life is valuable. The sanctity of life needs to be valued. The death of one man shouldn't be seen as nothing or insignificant.
Though all these happened because God willed it so, It should still be noted that the life of one man is valuable and must be respected as such, no matter what.

In it all, Jesus gave Himself away by providing an 'evidence' for which He must be put to death. Prior to this, the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false witnesses to witness against Jesus so that they could put Him to death, for according to one of the Mosaic Laws, one can only be convicted by the testimony of two or three witnesses (Deut 19:15).

Though they had witnesses, the testimonies of the witnesses were incoherent, therefore Jesus stood a chance of not being crucified. But because of the love Jesus has and still has for us and His Father, He gave Himself away when the high priest asked Him if He is the Christ, by saying, "But I say to all of you: In the future you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of Heaven."-(Matthew 26:57-68)

Though this is true, the high priest saw it as a blasphemy and now had evidence to prosecute Jesus.

Perhaps if Jesus had not said this, they would never have had evidence to convict Him and would have had to free Him as stipulated by the Mosaic Law. But He gave Himself away through His Own Words so you and I will have life and have It more abundantly๐Ÿ’–.
